Sucker Flat

Tricky place names

“The old timers seemed to enjoy thinking up tricky names for the early day camps. Sucker Flat got its name in a round-about way. The first cabin there was built by a man named Gates and for a time it was called Gatesville. Mr. Gates came from the state of Illinois. This state, for some reason unknown to me, was, and is, called the ‘Sucker State.’ So, it was natural for Gatesville to evolve to Sucker Flat, considering the sense of humor at the time.” – George Rigby
